The UC Davis Active Aggies group is devoted to providing Aggies with a chance to experience the outdoors and all its beauty. Keeping active – physically and mentally, improves quality of life! There are many UC Davis and UC properties, reserves and sites to explore throughout the area and we hope to introduce and increase exposure to these hidden gems.  Join fellow Aggies for hikes, walks and opportunities to explore, learn and grow.  It is also a banner under which many of our other Alumni Networks will share their more activity-centered events.

Some events will have limited access for attendees with mobility issues. If possible, activity level and mobility constraints information will be shared. As many events will be outside, and on irregular surfaces and exposed to inclement weather, we will strive to share that information as it’s available to the organizer and attendees.

TERC High Elevation Gardening Series; Wild Gooseberries

Prickly, wild gooseberries are native to the Tahoe Basin, but can we grow a domesticated version for use in the kitchen. Learn more about growing gooseberries and it's relative the raspberry. All participants receive starter plants, learn how to use them and grow them.

The plants that keep on giving! Enjoy farm to table kale and lettuce all summer long as you learn how to keep them trim and happy while keeping your body fed and happy. All participants receive starter plants, learn how to maintain, and how to grow them.

The known problem child of all Tahoe Gardens. After 3 seasons of studies these varieties were selected specifically for the Tahoe region. Grow your own crop of tasty tomatoes this summer. All participants receive starter plants and learn different ways to grow and maintain them.

Grape Picking and Winery Visit

Come pick grapes at a vineyard in the Grass Valley area and do your part to support the wine industry. The event will feature a visit to the winery and tasting room and then lunch, to wrap up the day.

The onion, a vegetable you love so much it makes you cry. The varietal selections are a continuation of our three season effort to identify Alliums suitable for the Tahoe/Truckee area. All participants receive starter plants, learn different ways to grow them and what specific varieties work at their home.

Presidio Park Commnity Service

UC Davis has organized a fun and active environmental service project at Presidio Park in San Francisco.

This is a great opportunity to be outdoors, stay active, meet others and get back to our Aggie roots! Please join us to preserve a treasured national park. Bring your friends and family to lend a helping hand!

Help enhance the park’s diverse and vibrant native plant communities. The Presidio is home to over 300 species of local plants, including five endangered species, as well as hundreds and hundreds of species of animals, including bats, birds, butterflies, frogs, lizards, and turtles. Ecological restoration seeks to revitalize disturbed natural areas, and preserve San Francisco’s unique natural heritage for future generations. Volunteer activities often include planting, mulching, watering, and weeding.

TERC High Elevation Gardening Series; Potatoes

The first of this series kicks off with the much loved starchy potato. Potatoes were one of the few vegetables known to be grown at Lake Tahoe during pioneer times. Native to the Andes, it is well-suited to our climate. All participants will receive starter potato plants, learn how to grow them, and figure out the varietal that works best in their own garden.

Buttermilk Bend Wildflowers Walk

Join the Active Aggies on a 2.4 mile roundtrip hike around Buttermilk Bend at the South Yuba River State Park. This 1.5 to 2 hour long hike amongst wildflowers will be led by a docent who will help identify the local plants. After the hike, bring a sack lunch and enjoy it on the picnic benches surrounded by wildflowers while you network with other UC Davis alumni.

The Last Straw 

Do one thing this Earth Day and commit to being straw free. 500 million straws are used and discarded every day in the United States alone. That’s enough straws to wrap around the Earth’s circumference 2.5 times a day! Join local students and become part of a regional and global movement to eliminate plastic drinking straws from our landfills, streams, oceans, and beaches.
