The UC Davis Undergraduate Research Center offers students multiple avenues to participate in research or secure funding. Abstracts and application deadlines fall in February for both the annual conference and a new research initiative.

The college experience includes a blend of education, social and personal growth. It is a time for your student to evolve and thrive. However, with the increased responsibilities and independence that students experience as they emerge into adulthood, they inevitably face challenges as well. Many students experience mental health issues – often for the first time. As a parent concerned about your student’s education, and successful transition to a career and the independence it can bring, what support can you provide to ensure a happy and healthy outcome?

This is the fourth part of a series where we highlight part of the academic transition your student might be experiencing and questions you can ask your student to help support them through this transition. 

In the winter quarter, your student should start exploring housing options for the next academic year. And there are some important things to consider. Do they want to live on campus or off campus? 

Students wanting to return to on-campus housing can find information about the Returning Student Program. On-campus housing allows for a meal plan and lower costs for transportation.  

Former Aggie football captain Derek Baljeu ’17, M.S. ’18 has found his calling in the world of wine, bringing his dedication from the game field to the vineyards as a winemaker in Napa Valley.

After taking the class “Introduction to Winemaking” his first year to fulfill a general education requirement, Baljeu says he fell in love with the subject. He soon changed his major to viticulture and enology and began his first winemaking internship at a small family winery.

The winter break will be here before we know it as students prepare for finals, register for new classes, and prepare for a much needed break from school work. With the break in school work and classes, the Career Center has 3 tips for making the winter break a great time for students to tend to their career development.
