Sonoe Hirabayashi, Winemaker & Owner of Six Cloves Wines

Headshot of Sonoe Hirabayashi

Sonoe Hirabayashi was born in Japan to a family whose ancestors have crafted sake, soy sauce, and miso for generations. She continued this ancestral tradition of fermentation by becoming a California winemaker. While working as an accountant in New York City, she became enamored with the emotional depth and history of wine, prompting a career change. This passion led her to the University of California, Davis, where she earned her B.S. in Viticulture & Enology in 2011, finding the perfect opportunity to combine the science of winemaking with its art.

In 2017, Sonoe founded Six Cloves Wines. Today, her work actively bridges the gap between the United States and Japan, positioning wine as a powerful mediator of culture and language. By blending the generosity of California agriculture with a Japanese sensitivity to restraint, balance, and harmony, she creates elegant, food-friendly wines designed to move seamlessly between diverse cuisines and conversations. Through her exports to Japan, collaborative winemaking projects, and cross-cultural partnerships, Sonoe uses her craft to foster transnational connection and translate shared human experiences across borders.
