African and African American Alumni Association (5A) Award and Membership Award

The African and African American Alumni Association (5A) is a chapter within the Cal Aggie Alumni Association (CAAA) that through giving, mentorship and volunteerism, helps UC Davis students. In 2016, the 5A Award was created to help students pay their way through college and to assist in enhancing their UC Davis experience. In addition, 5A annually awards a CAAA lifetime membership to a graduating student. Please see the separate applications below.

5A Scholarship

Awarded to a currently enrolled full-time student. Students have the opportunity to win a $1,000 award. Students will be recognized and presented with their award at the 5A Black Family Day Spring Event on May 18, 2019.

Criteria

Before submitting an application, please review the following criteria to ensure that you are eligible to apply for this scholarship:

  • Must be at least a currently enrolled full time fourth quarter student with a minimum of 36 units completed at UC Davis and with a minimum GPA of 2.5 (UC GPA).
  • Applicant demonstrates leadership in student organizations, clubs, community activities, employment, or personal situations.
  • Applicant must be a U.S. citizen/permanent resident (*USC/LPR/or AB 540 eligible).
  • If selected for an interview, applicant must be available during the week of February 11 – 15, 2019 for an interview set by local alumni committee.
  • Must be receiving financial aid such as, loans, work study or have “unmet” need.
  • Applicants who apply may be eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship award for the spring 2019 quarter.

  • Fill out biographical information.
  • Please submit a copy of your MyAwards budget page in order to establish financial need/eligibility.
  • Write a 500-word essay describing how your leadership experiences have helped you to define your education and career goals at UC Davis. This essay should include your responses to the following questions:
    1. Using at least two examples, tell us how you have supported and engaged with African American students, academically or culturally, at UC Davis?  Examples, involvement in student organizations, clubs, community activities, employment or personal situations, etc.   
    2. On a separate piece of paper, compose a letter to an incoming African American student describing how you used the resources on or off campus to help you adapt to the academic and social environment at UC Davis.  How would you advise this student to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead?

5A Membership Award

Awarded to a graduating senior who has demonstrated leadership within the African American and African Community. The award recipient will receive a lifetime membership (valued at over $425) to the Cal Aggie Alumni Association.

Criteria

Before submitting an application, please review the following criteria to ensure that you are eligible to apply for this scholarship:

  • Must be a graduating senior.
  • Applicant demonstrates leadership in extra-curricular activities, community activity and/or employment.
  • Applicants must be a U.S. citizen/permanent resident (*USC/LPR or AB 540 eligible)
